Experience applied to your circumstances
I have obtained P-1A approvals for many BJJ athletes. Every case still requires its own analysis. For the internationally recognized individual athlete route, both your international reputation and the level of the proposed competitions matter. A belt, a medal, or a sponsor alone does not establish eligibility.
A medal tells only part of the story
As a third-degree BJJ black belt and former coach, I know that results need context. In my case review, I look at the event, year, belt, age and weight division, gi or no-gi format, and the field of competitors. Save the official result and information that explains the competition’s significance.
What does “sponsor” mean?
When I ask about a P-1A sponsor, I mean the proposed U.S. petitioner who would file and sign the petition. I review whether the proposed petitioner and arrangement meet the applicable requirements. You can start the questionnaire even if you do not have a petitioner yet.
START WITH WHAT YOU HAVE
Your preparation checklist
- Your belt and division, with your three most significant results and official links.
- Rankings, independent articles, and records of recognition beyond your academy.
- Upcoming U.S. events, dates, and invitations.
- Sponsor or petitioner details and the role each would play.
This is a starting point for our conversation, not a list of every legal requirement. You do not need to upload documents to get in touch.
